Most of the population is concentrated in the Andes and along the coast. Although almost half of the land area lies south and east of the Orinoco River, that area contains only 4% of the population. The capital is Caracas (4.5 million). Other major towns are Maracaibo and Valencia. The terrain is varied and the climate ranges from tropical to temperate, depending on elevation. Most Venezuelans are of European, Amerindian, ans/or African descent. The most recent period of European immigration dates to the early 1950s, when many Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese immigrants arrived.
