Excursions and Local Attractions
Trieste is a gem of the Adriatic sea, kissed by the bora wind in Winter and blessed by the sea breeze in Summer.
Come in the Summer to experience the seaside at its best on the clean beaches of Sistiana and Duino, where a lived in Medieval Castle dominates on top of the cliffs. Enjoy the sandy beaches of nearby Lignano and Grado, one of the most beautiful Venetian towns.
In Autumn all the leaves of the surrounding Carso hills will start turning yellow, orange and red and will make a perfect picture for the memorable Barcolana sailing race (the biggest in the Mediterranean) in mid October.
December sees Trieste lit up for the long San Niccolò Christmas Market, filled with the smell of roasted chestnuts on the streets’ corners. The theatre and opera season will keep you company in the relaxed afternoons as well as the typical historical caffè, where you can still meet poets and writers like you could a century ago.
In Spring Carso will blossom together with its typical osmizze, country restaurants where local produce of salami, ham, cheeses and of course Terrano wine are sold. Major sporting events will start in Trieste, including the Two Castles Marathon.
Come to Trieste at any time and wonder through its Città Vecchia narrow alleys and the lively antiques market, up the San Giusto hill where the Medieval Castle and Cathedral stand next to the rests of the Roman Basilica and square. Explore the museums and art galleries, the magnificent Habsburg Miramare Castle and its exotic park, the largest cave in Europe at Grotta Gigante. Follow the Italian history of the last century by visiting the Risiera concentration camp and the communist Foiba, observing the City’s neoclassical architecture and learning about its mixed religious and ethnic background. Take a tram ride to the stunning Napoleonic path or just treasure a stroll along the Barcola promenade or a boat trip to the nearby Venetian town of Muggia, not forgetting to try the delicious local ice creams.
An approximately 1 hour car journey will take us to Lubljana, the beautiful capital of Slovenia and the Croatian coast (once part of Italy), the ‘Giulie’ Alps and the Medioeval town of Cividale and its vineyards. A two hour train journey will even take us to Venice!
Accommodation, Facilities and Local Area
Trieste is a Mediterranean city and port, surrounded by the Adriatic sea and the Carso hills. Its history intertwines with that of the Roman, Venetian and Habsburg empires, and saw the city being an important theatre for the events of the whole 20th century. By living in Trieste you will be at only one hour from Ljubljana -the romantic capital of Slovenia-, the fabulous Croatian sea resorts and the Giulian Alps.
