Mauritius gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1968. Previously, the British had taken over control from the French during the Napoleonic Wars. Mauritius has the distinction of being the only known location of the flightless Dodo bird – extinct after only a few years of European colonisation. The islanders speak English, French and Mauritian Creole. Capital Port Louis.
