About the Eurolingua Institute
Founded in 1993 by J. Barry Haywood (MCIL), the Eurolingua Institute is the largest international organization of its kind, offering unique language learning opportunities for individuals aged 16 to 75+ from all walks of life. Learning a foreign language including French in France, Spanish in Spain, Italian in Italy, or English in the UK is easy thanks to Eurolingua’s immersive language programmes in countries where your target language is spoken natively.
Eurolingua welcomes students and business clients from around the world, offering language programmes in countries where English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish are the national languages. Our aim is to provide an authentic, one-on-one learning experience in the heart of each language’s culture.

How Eurolingua Came to Be
The Eurolingua Institute was born from a personal journey. After more than 20 years as an International Management Consultant, working mainly in Europe, North and West Africa, the USA and the Middle East, J. Barry Haywood, a British student of French, wanted to give back to the man who had made his journey possible—his French teacher!. Barry’s vision for creating an immersive, culturally enriching language learning experience led to the founding of the Eurolingua Institute in 1993.
In Barry’s words:
“I wanted to spend more time in France and bring others the joy I experienced in learning French and its culture. My teacher suggested using my management and organisational skills to arrange language programmes for people who needed to learn quickly for social, educational, or commercial reasons. From this idea, I began developing “homestay study visits“, where students could live in the family home (“homestay”) of a qualified and experienced native language tutor and receive one-to-one tuition in a welcoming, homely and secure environment. And so, the Eurolingua Institute was born.”
Today, Eurolingua boasts over 250 homestay locations, offering language programmes for all levels and ages, in countries where the target language is spoken natively. We also provide Easter and summer group programmes, with our ‘flagship’ French programme based in Montpellier, South of France, offering year-round group and individual French language courses. In addition, we also offer a unique English language and cultural ‘homestay’ experience in north-east Scotland, to the south of Aberdeen. Beautiful land and seascapes, ancient castles, warm hospitality and much more!!
Our Students
Eurolingua students and business clients come from Europe, Scandinavia, North and Latin America, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. Ranging in age from 16 to 75+, our learners span various professions and backgrounds, united by their desire to improve their language skills in an authentic, immersive environment.
Language Learning Method
The Eurolingua Language Homestay Immersion programme has been meticulously developed to offer total immersion in your target language. Whether you are learning English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, or Spanish, the programme ensures you are completely immersed in both the language and culture from day one.
You’ll live in the home of a qualified Eurolingua Homestay Tutor, who provides structured, individual tuition at the appropriate level (beginner to advanced, A1-C2 on the European Scale). Lessons are typically 15, 20, or 25 hours per week, with a flexible schedule tailored to you—whether in the mornings, afternoons, evenings, or weekends. The programme duration is usually 1 to 4 weeks, but can extend up to 12 weeks for those wishing to experience several national locations.
As part of the homestay experience, you’ll practice conversational skills with family members, friends, and neighbors, share family meals, and participate in daily activities—giving you ample opportunities to refine your accent and fluency.
One pre-planned excursion per week is included in the programme, and you’re welcome to join in on additional social and cultural activities with your host family. This all-encompassing approach makes the Eurolingua One-to-One Language Homestay Immersion programme an unforgettable and effective way to become fluent in your chosen language.
