Excursions and Local Attractions
Fossano: a town in Piemonte (Piedmont) region, northern Italy, northeast of Cuneo (city). Fossano is the site of a 14th-century four-sided castle, which belonged to the princes of Acaia; its hospital and the Trinity Church were designed by Francesco Gallo in the 18th century. The town has mineral baths and is an agricultural and cattle-breeding centre. Local industries include textiles, metallurgy, and chemicals. Pop. (2006 est.) mun., 24,274. Il castello degli Acaia - the massive castle was built by the Acaias in the 14th century and was turned into a stately home by the Savoias in the 18th century. It has a square plan and four squared 45 degrees rotated towers located at each angle. The inner cylindrical towers of the courtyard were added later during the 19th century's restoration.
Piedmont: Langhe is a hilly area next to Fossano, well known for his beautiful landscape, its wine production and its food. Students might be offered opportunities for food experiences, as well as for discoveries of local history through visiting castles and palaces of historical interest. This is ideal for adult students.
Liguria seaside: the seaside (Liguria) is 80 Km from Fossano and can be reached easily in 1 hour by car or motorbike. Liguria offers a wonderful landscape with beautiful beaches and exciting leisure opportunities.
Riviera: Liguria is a long, thin coastal strip stretching from the border with France down to Tuscany. A spectacular meeting of mountains and clear, turquoise sea combined with a mild climate throughout the year is what makes Liguria so alluring.
The Ligurian Riviera offers endless changing scenery and some of Europe’s finest coastal walking. The inland valleys and villages still maintain their middle age charm and have superb historical centres; here you can discover organic farms producing top quality olive oils, wines and cheeses and sample the traditional cuisine. As you head towards the coast the landscape dramatically changes, from tiny pastel fishing villages of steep, narrow streets and miniature squares to glamorous and chic beach resorts with sandy beaches offering various sporting activities, Liguria has plenty to offer the visitor.
