Extra Class Language Centre in St. Petersburg Extra Class is a top quality language school that offers intensive individual and group Language Courses in St. Petersburg, Russia. We have been running immersion language training and homestay programmes for over 10 years, and our Russian language course books have gained worldwide recognition.
Your Russian course will take place in an over 100 year-old building across the street from Rimsky-Korsakov memorial flat, within just a short walk from Nevsky prospect, the famous main street of St. Petersburg (They say, about 2 000 000 people walk on Nevsky daily!), and from Dostoyevsky museum, in an atmospheric part of the city known as The Five Corners. Other places of cultural importance in the area include the house where Sergei Dovlatov, a famous Russian dissident writer, had lived before he moved to New York, and the legendary Leningrad Rock Club, the most prominent out of the very few places in the Soviet Union where underground rock bands were allowed to play. Social and Cultural Activities
St. Petersburg, “the Venice of the North” spread on 44 islands connected by about 800 bridges in the delta of the Neva with its 93 rivers and canals near the Baltic sea, combines a rich and dramatic history with the excitement of a modern megalopolis with over 5 000 000 population.
For those interested in Russian literature the city offers memories of great Russian classics like Pushkin, Gogol and Dostoyevsky to many great XXth century writers like Andrei Bely, Nabokov, Akhmatova and Brodsky, to name a few.
St. Petersburg music tradition is as significant as that in literature: from great composers of the past like Glinka, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov to the first Soviet jazz band, the first jazz club in the USSR and the legendary Leningrad Rock Club.
Today St. Petersburg can satisfy every taste and overpass any expectations with its world famous Mariinsky and over 100 other theatres, about 80 museums ranging from unique art collections like The Hermitage and the Russian Museum to some unusual and exclusive places like Russian vodka museum or the Museum of Bread. The Hermitage alone has over 3 000 000 exhibits displayed in more than 350 halls of 5 beautiful buildings. Spending just a minute at each of the artifacts will take you 8 years.
In addition to great architecture and cultural treasures, St. Petersburg nightlife is vivid and varied, with clubs for every taste, and don’t forget luxurious fitness clubs, 24/7 shopping, skating rinks, and much more!

Some of our host families are located in the city centre within a walking distance from our school, while others might be a few stations away by the underground, but they’re always within just 5 minutes walk from an underground station. The Russian underground, in addition to being the world’s deepest, is safe, easy to use, cheap and clean, stations are decorated with marble and mosaics. We carefully select our host families and monitor students’ feedback, we have been working with most of them for years. However we understand people have different personalities and different expectations, so if for whatever reason you don’t feel comfortable, please inform the school staff, and we will find a solution or move you to another host family.
The number of hostels and minihotels in St. Petersburg is growing, and we can offer a few within a short walk both from the school and Nevsky, the main street of the city and perhaps the most famous street of the world’s largest country.
